The Norwegian Whale Centre at Andenes was established in 1988 and is situated in an old fish processing warehouse at the harbour front. The Whale Centre offers a unique combination of tourism, education and research. Tourists visiting the Whale Centre or going at a Whale Safari trip are invited also to see the museum on whales, their biology, research and whaling housed at the Whale Centre. A multi media show on whales and their environment is shown several times a day.
WHALE SAFARI
In Andenes, the edge of the continental shelf is closer to land than anywhere else along the coast of Norway. In the bay that constitutes this part of the shelf, a stable stock of sperm whales feeds and thus forms the basis of whale watching tours in the region of Vesterålen. It is only a one hour voyage from Andenes to the feeding grounds. A normal trip, with a two hour stay in the area, lasts about 4-5 hours.
KILLLER WHALES
Tysfjord is especially known for its great concentration of killer whales that enter the fjord every fall. The killer whales follow the spawning herring, which also every year has come to Tysfjord in great shoals between October and January. Nature is overwhelming north of the Polar circle. The days are short, but at night the aurora may really light up the sky.
Tysfjord is a municipality with distinctive features. The area is impressive with its wild and beautiful scenery with deep fjords and steep, majestic mountains. The mountains are spectacular and the fjords abounding in fish of various species. Tysfjord is situated where Norway is at its narrowest. From Hellemobotn and to the Swedish border there is only 6 km. The county is a two cultural commune as it is center for the Lule-Sami population in Norway.
RIVER SAFARI
Drammen River flows into Drammensfjord, which is 25 km long. Its shores are one large recreational area with cottages and opportunities for bathing and angling, all the way to the narrow rapid Svelvikstrømmen. Both the fjord and the river offer great fishing, salmon and trout being the most attractive catches in the river, notably at Hokksund and Hellefossen.
A fjord safari and charter tours by M/S Drammen include a visit to splendidNøstetangen Glassworks. Combined a boat and bus tour to experience the interesting sights of Drammen and Eiker region. Groups can book tours on the fjord on board the wonderful 118-year-old galeas, the Christiane.
The River Festival takes place every year in Drammen. The festival features concerts, fun fair, dragon boats, raft racing and bathtub rowing. More than 100 different events take place during the River Festival.
LIGHT HOUSE SAFARI
The waters around Florø are dangerous and exposed. Three ligthhouses were built in the fairways to the town at an early date. Two, Stabben and Kvanhovden are now automated and unmanned. The 3rd and largest, Ytterøyane, is still manned. Take an exciting and exoctic trip to the lights. Guided tours in the summer season.
The coast around Florø is ideal for diving most of the year. There are many shallow waters west of Florø. An abundance of shipwrecks tempts divers to explore the clear waters. Excursions can be arranged.
Svanøy Estate is an old seat of nobility from 1685, 62 acres of cultivated land and 30 acres of woodland. An impressive main building and an old garden full of beautiful trees. Norwegian Deer farm is a competence centre within research on fallow buck and common deer. Breeding and development projects. Here you can watch the beautiful animals being fed. Guided tours in the summer season.
MOOSE SAFARI
Experience the thrill of a close meeting with the moose; the largest land animal in Europe! The moose is called Elg in Norwegian, but the moose is not comparable with the american elk. The elk (cervus canadensis), however, is an entirely different deer (much smaller). The moose is Europes largest land animal, also the largest member in the deer family. A fully grown bull are over 2 meters high at the shoulders and weighs up to 750 kg (1650 lb). Cows seldom weighs more than 470 kg (1035 lb).
The Mooses are quite shy and are easily scared back into the woods, but normally they are quite co-operative and allow us to get quite near. A safari could be done by everyone, normally we do not need to walk at all; they could be seen from the car or bus.
CAVEING
Caves are dark, mysterious and challenging. Most of the caves in Norway are wild caves and have not been developed in any way. They are the same temperature (above freezing) all year round, and feel cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Caving is a year-round adventure for both novice and experienced cavers. Anyone with some hiking experience will do fine. From beautiful limestone formations to deep caving systems.
DOG SLEDDING
Dog-sledge driving is a total experience of speed, teamwork and grandiose scenery. Experience the exhilaration of standing on the runners of your sledge and driving your own team of dogs. A total experience of speed, teamwork and scenery.
Very little tuition is needed - the dogs know what they are doing! One of the delights of the trip is getting to know your own dogs which are very friendly and good companions. Sled dogs love running!
The team works together under your instruction - you have to be part of the team - the leader behind the lead dog. A balance of love and direction is required by the driver.
MINING SAFARI
The Konnerud mines are located in the hills around Konnerud. You will enter the mines into the main gallery, and the Contact gallery from where you will have access to the museum, the washingroom, a locomotive stable and a mineral exhibition. In the near future, these may be reached via a mining train, when it is completed.
The road is open year-round, so it is possible to make the tour on your own. Entering the mines, however, requires the company of a guide. Otherwise, the area is open for all. From the Contact gallery, you will proceed a further 700 metres into the mine. You will be able to witness mining procedures as performed during the last period of activity - 1905-1913. The main gallery, also called "Wedel Ownership Gallery", is the entrance to mining during the period of 1730-1770. Guides will give you an insight into the mining industry of years gone by and also the living conditions of the workers.
