Jack Sparrow and The Pirates of the Caribbean are quite notorious after Hollywood made the most of using the charm of the legendary fearsome pirates that prowled the oceans centuries ago. However the romantic type of pirate we see on the screen is in fact far from the real people that inspired the myth of the adventures who dared to haunt the uncharted waters of the world.
The history taught fit to remember that if some of them were in the service of the crowns of Europe, most of them were simply villains capable of great cruelty but also of great spirit of adventure and taste for gold and impressive treasures.
In an age where the major commerce was conducted on the seas of the world, when fortunes were made or lost with the ships carrying precious goods and outstanding amounts of gold and jewels, the piracy created celebrities. Fierce leaders able to master huge monstrous ships and numerous crews were then the equals of the celebrities we worship today.
